Joseph DeLappe & Micol Hebron
Two well known artists who use intermedia art when creating are Micol Hebron and Joseph DeLappe. Micol Hebron is a versatile American artist and a professor at Chapman University who focuses on feminism activism in art. Joseph Delappe is a UK based American artist who focuses his art on contemporary issues in politics.Hebron went on to study theater and visual arts at the University of San Diego for a year, as well as at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia. She then went on to graduate from the university of UCLA in 1995 with a Bachelors in fine arts and a Masters in fine arts in 2000. Delappe went on to receive an Associate in Arts from the City College of San Francisco and a Bachelor’s in Graphic Design from San Jose State University, after graduating high school. He also accomplished getting a Master in Computers in Art & Design, as well as a Master of Fine Arts in Pictorial Arts from the CADRE Laboratory for New Media. These two artists went through alot of schooling before starting their successful careers to gain as much knowledge and experience in art. And as time went by they found unique ways in which they can express how passionate they are for certain issues.
These artists’ work are very well known, they bring a lot of uniqueness to the table. Hebron protested Instagrams social network nipple policy and social media sexism by creating a movement known as “Acceptable Male Nipple Template”.The template showed an image of a male nipple that could be photoshopped onto an image of a woman’s breast, similar to a pastie. The template immediately went viral causing her to be suspended multiple times from social media networks.Following these events Hebron attended a meeting held by instagram regarding censorship policies in which Hebron used as an opportunity to post a topless selfie on her instagram account immediately after the meeting causing her account to be shutdown. Joseph Delappe works with electronic and new media, some of his work includes online gaming, sculpting, and electromagnetic installation. Delappe began a project known as “Dead in Iraq” in 2006, which consisted of typing in all the casualties of the war in Iraq into the “America’s Army” recruiting game.
Most of Micol Hebron and Joseph Delappe art is based on one certain issue that they are greatly passionate about. Hebron focuses her art on feminism. Partly because of a collaborative art project known as “Gallery Tally”; people all around the world started to track women’s representation in art galleries. Hebron found that 70% of gallery representation was of male artists. Delappe on the other hand focuses mainly on politics especially those involved with the military.Joseph Delappe states that when he got into politics art he found his purpose.
The issues that both artists focus on are very relevant in today’s world. It’s important to talk about controversial topics, and art is a great way to give a different perspective. Feminism is so important to me because as a women I experience the troubles of gender discrimination. I am very glad that female artists like Hebron are not scared to speak upon issues that are controversial among men and women. Delappe focuses on a topic as equally as important as feminism which is politics. Politics is basically anything related to what’s happening in today’s world so being able to speak on it through different types of media really sends. valuable lessons to the younger audience. It’s important to express art in different ways because as times evolves art does as well. And if artists want to grab people’s attention especially the younger generation then they need new approaches.
